what a military spouse knows. A MUST READ.

I saw this on Facebook and just had to share this. Hubs and I haven't been through a deployment together yet (there is a possibility of one coming in the near future, but as always, you never know with the military)...but this really moved me.

***

As many of you know, my husband came home from our third deployment not too long ago. During the deployment, a reporter asked me to share “What I Knew” about deployments and military life. This was my answer:

As I forced my hands to unfurl from his neck, feeling the familiar sting in my nose as tears pushed against my will, the words rattled and echoed in my brain. “Not again.”

I watched him walk away–that uniform, identifiable gait—and my heart bent and splintered as the reality of a third deployment began to shower over me.

I picked up the phone, dialing the numbers my numb fingers always meander toward, and sat in silence while she tried to ease my pain. “I can’t imagine…He will be home….I’m here.”

And then she said six words that shot through my ears, penetrated my brain, and stiffened my spine: “You know how to do this.”

She was right. I do know how to do this. I intimately know the all-too familiar lump in my throat. The year of being both father and mother, making the best of a situation. I know exactly how one year feels as I X each day off my calendar. And I know how to ensure that while our lives are on hold, we still live.

The truth is I know a lot:

  • The thought of being alone for a year doesn’t bother me. The fear of being alone for a lifetime—does.
  • Flat rate boxes can hold twenty whoopee cushions, four kindergarten projects, and five perfume-scented letters.
  • Technology can be a double-edged sword—one side delivering his face; the other a brutal live-action feed of explosions and camouflaged body parts.
  • Murphy’s Law is a constant companion. The moment he walks out the door, anything that can break, collapse, bleed, or explode–will .
  • Five hours of uninterrupted sleep is a gift from the deployment gods
  • Holidays are hard, but manageable.
  • Deployments come and go, but sand from his boots never leaves.
  • Nothing can replace a handwritten letter. Through those beautifully folded pages, he is holding my hand again.
  • When the National Anthem is played, I know goosebumps will rise on my arms, and a lump will fill my throat.
  • The silence in communication following a war zone attack is agonizing.
  • Laughter is a powerful ally.
  • Each deployment offers two options: grow or regress. This is a choice.
  • Cereal is always a dinner option.
  • Videos of lost teeth, ballerina recitals, and preschool graduations can be emailed to Iraq nearly instantly.
  • Five powers of attorney and the intimate details of his will are needed to navigate a deployment.
  • White out blizzards can actually bury a truck in five minutes.
  • Rosie the Riveter was right: We can do it.
  • Children cling to hope and the promise of tomorrow.
  • Living in each moment together is possible when facing the fear that it could be your last.
  • Welcome home kisses are sweeter than the finest chocolate.
  • Anger will grip me and depression can hold me, but another military spouse will steady me.
  • A six-year-old child can feel the absence of her father so deeply that she can suffer from clinical depression.
  • A military spouse will often hold her/his tongue, silencing a story, for fear of sounding “unpatriotic.”
  • The sound of a bugle can make my heart swell with pride or collapse in sorrow.
  • Duct tape and a monkey wrench can fix nearly anything.
  • Despite the protestors and those who tell me I “knew” what I was getting into, I know there are countless American citizens who will go above and beyond to show they support us.

There are many things I know.

I know how to change the brakes on my truck, rappel from the side of a cliff, shoot a double-barreled shotgun, balance a checkbook, earn my keep, and kiss a child enough to feel like two.

But there are still so many things I don’t know.

  • I don’t know how to start my heart again when I see a death notification car on my street.
  • When that knock echoes on the door of my neighbor, I don’t know how to forgive myself when I am relieved.
  • I don’t know how to hug him enough to last a lifetime, or kiss him just so in order to feel satisfied—should our reunion be at the foot of a pine box.
  • I’m not willing to learn how to pretend he doesn’t exist, to keep him out of our life while it goes on without him, or to build a wall so high he has no way to scale it.
  • I don’t know how to stop his panic attacks, and I have no idea how to make my nightmares of rampant bombs and lifeless limbs disappear.
  • I don’t know how to adjust to his presence in my house when our floor rarely feels the weight of his boots.
  • I don’t know how to tell his small children that, yes, he leaves them all the time. But because he loves them so deeply, he is willing to die to keep them free.
  • I can’t understand those who would question my desire to stay with him, or how I can peacefully sleep beside a “killer.”
  • I am amazed and confounded that despite all he has seen, he still has the courage to laugh.
  • I don’t’ know how to give up on my family.

But, most importantly:

I have no clue how to still my pounding heart when he finally walks through our door again, I don’t know how to pull my hands from his sand-stained neck and say goodbye, and I don’t know how to ever walk away from a man who stands while many choose to sit.

getting to know you!

This is an older one, but I haven't done it yet :D

1. If a person has a booger in their nose and you can see it, do you tell them?
Depends on the person...if it is my husband or a family member or a close friend, then yes. If it is some random person, then no.

2. What are you passionate about?
Nursing, helping people and of course all things military :)

3. How long have you been blogging?
At the end of July will mark my first year of blogging!

4. What is your favorite "summer" drink?
iced tea...and summer shandy! but unfortunately I have not found any summer shandy here...I have found other beers by Lienenkugel, but no summer shandy :(

5. What is your favorite type of music?
I like just about everything, except for country. You would think that I would start to love it because I live in Texas and everything, but I don't.

6. Something I do before I go to bed is...?
Usually cuddle up on the couch and watch something on Netflix with the hubby :)

7. My summer vacation plans are...?
work work work! and enjoy time with hubby when I can. and try to take trips on my weekends off. not every single weekend, but once in awhile. especially with the possibility of deployment later this year. oh, and we're planning on going to San Antonio this weekend! If any of my readers have been there, what should we do??

8. My favorite must-have, can't-live-without, beauty product is...?
Urban Decay's Naked Palette!!!

blog hop!

So even though I bought a car, it still isn't here yet. It was supposed to be here last Monday, but I guess it didn't get on the truck until the middle of the week. The car is coming from a port in Houston, but then VW told me there is no way to determine the route the truck will make. Even though Houston is only about 3 hours away, the truck could go to Dallas, then SA, to El Paso (which is like freaking' 7 hours away) and all of these other places until it comes to Killeen. Hubby called on Friday and was told the car would either be in on Saturday (which it wasn't) or today. I'm hoping today.

I had my nursing orientation last week, too! Some of the nurses have been in the profession for 15+ years, others have been in for a year or so, and then there was me, the new grad lol. Everyone was very nice and five of us (including myself) will be working together. Sort of. There are three of us on PGCU - one is on nights with me and the other girl (whom I love and is a fellow Army wife!) is working days. Another girl is on days in the ICU and a guy is on nights in the TCU. The TCU and PGCU are virtually the same thing and we are also cross-trained to work in the ICU, as well. My first night will be on the 29th - I'm excited but I'm also scared shitless lol. This will be my first time on the floor as an RN. I'm not quite sure what to expect that night. I just hope my preceptor is patient with me, because apparently real-world nursing is totally different from nursing school.
And it makes me feel good that my fellow night-shifters said they will help me out whenever I need it. They said I will be fine and I will get it eventually, it will just take time. No one will leave me to fend for myself lol!

Last night hubby and I were making chili. We wanted to throw a whole habanero in - seeds, vein and all! So I started to mince it, gently. And then of course, the knife some how flicks a seed that hits me straight in the eye! I screamed some profanities and stumbled around, and hubby rushed over to see what happened. I was about to rub my eyes when he stopped me, then he guided me over to the tub and instructed me to flush my eye out in the cool running water. I was there for about 20 minutes. It was agonizing. I have even more respect for soldiers/civilian police who have to get OC sprayed for training. Hubby's BOLC class all got OC'ed the second time I went to FLW. I felt really bad for them there. Mind you, habanero peppers range from 150,000 - 350,000 SHU, or Scoville Heat Units. OC spray is much more potent, starting out at 1,000,000+ SHUs. Although the burn from the habanero was agonizing, I can only imagine what the OC spray is like. I don't wish that feeling on anyone.

But now I have to just look back and laugh, because this would only happen to me haha.

das auto

I bought a new car today :)

It's a Volkswagen 2011 Shadow Blue Metallic GTI DSG (automatic).
Ironically the same exact car my brother drives, just a different color and transmission.

E and I spent hours at a used dealer yesterday and a VW dealer. We test drove a 2009 Jetta SE which I admit was very nice. We also test drove a 2010 Civic SI, and were NOT impressed at all. My 2000 Civic EX drove better than that!!
After test driving, the dealer starting hounding us with prices to try to get us to buy the car. He would not leave us alone! We kept telling him we would think about it and he kept asking "well what is there to think about? you like the car, right? it's a perfect fit, yes?" blah blah blah.
We left.
We went to a certified VW dealer to look around, ask questions and test drive the 2011 Jetta SE and 2011 GTI. I liked both cars a lot, especially the GTI. The sales reps we dealt with were very nice and were not pushy at all.
As soon as I found out they could get me a 2 door shadow blue metallic GTI, I was very interested and bought the car.
I traded in my Honda for $3500, which I think is fair, and there is a MPG event going on so I get a free $300 gas card!
I also saved close to $1,000 off the MSRP price through USAA.
and 1.9% financing! :)
I wouldn't have gotten a car if I couldn't afford it. And for awhile I was thinking maybe I should wait, but this color (along with Tornado Red) are hard to come by and this one is really brand new - only driven by the dealer. It will probably have no more than 6 miles on it once it comes to Killeen.
I'm so happy I got the car! Decent gas mileage (although less than my Civic) and now I have to put 93 premium in my car, but work isn't all that far away.
Plus I now have 200 turbo-charged ponies under the hood! :D
And I love the hatchback style. Hubby says it is definitely "a Mel car."
The car won't be here until Monday, so for now I am driving around a fully-loaded black GTI :)

Friday Fill-in!

1. Underwear Parties, how old is too old?

Underwear Parties? lol I'm not sure if I have ever heard of this one...

2. What was your favorite class in high school?

Biology and Chemistry! And then when I was forced to take General, Organic & Biochemistry as prerequisites to nursing school, I have since then despised it :)

3. Have you ever convinced packers/movers to pack something they aren't supposed to for PCS?

No...but I'm sure that will happen at some point.

4. Blogging plays a growing role in the media. If you were asked to embed as a blogger with a deployed military unit, would you go? What do you think your blog would be like?

I would go in a heartbeat! and I could double as a nurse and take care of the wounded! But I would blog from a military perspective, of course. Maybe occasionally about my job, but my purpose would be documenting the events of the deployed unit, yes? all while maintaining OPSEC/PERSEC, of course :)

5. Do you think kids should attend year-round school?

When I used to live in Florida, we had school year-round...not sure if that has changed since then. I really don't think it's that big of a deal and I think it's easier for the parents, too. I remember getting a 3-4 week "summer break" and of course we would still have spring break and things like that. As long as there some break somewhere in there, I don't see a problem with it. No one can go to school non-stop and be successful.

What's Your Song?

This week is You're The Best by Joe Esposisto. The song from Karate Kid hahahaha. I love this song, it always pumps me up, and Karate Kid is such a classic movie. I like to get into this mindset since I'm starting work very soon. I'm the best (RN) around, nothing's ever gonna keep me down! lol

wee bit wednesday.

{one} what color best describes you + why?
purple. because it is my favorite :)

{two} how have you changed in the past year?
I have changed a lot. I have become more confident in myself, but I still have a lot more growing up to do. I am finally living my life with my husband in the heart of Texas. <3

{three} have you ever had any surgeries?
wisdom teeth. that's it.

{four} why did you start your blog?
It originally had a nursing school focus, but then I want to blog about the Army, especially when hubby and I took it to the next level (we got engaged and of course married). I like blogging because I can talk about whatever and also vent my frustrations when I need to.

{five} what are you looking forward to this summer?
starting work in less than a week! and getting my tan on. I've been here for what, 3 weeks now, maybe 4? and I'm still awfully pale. That's what you get for not being able to tan and it's so hot that I can't sit out there for very long lol. and finally, spending time with hubby :)

{six} do you have any family traditions for the 4th of July?
just fireworks.

{seven} what’s something new that you’ve tried in the past few months?
frozen yogurt lol. and I'm ADDICTED! and E and I have this "discussion" about it...he doesn't like it when it call it froyo because it's frozen yogurt, not froyo, and it's only called froyo at the place in St. Louis. He just doesn't get that froyo is the short word for frozen yogurt lol.

{eight} what is the perfect a/c temperature?
77. It's still nice and cool in here but we're not freezing and we're not racking up a huge electric bill, either.

{nine} what was the last movie you saw in the theater?
Super8.

{ten} what song do you think everyone should hear at least once?
Go out there and enjoy music - listen to everything! I don't think I could pick a single song.

beauty favorites post

What are some of your favorite beauty products at the moment? Here are mine:

Nails that Ke$ha would be proud of.
NYX Megashine Lipglosses. I have these in Perfect (a very pale peachy shade with subtle shimmer...a "your lips but better" kind of gloss) and Golden Pink. They're cheap (like $5.99) and have a wide range of really pretty colors :) They have a strong cherry scent to them, though, so if you're sensitive to smells you might want to stay away from these. They are also somewhat sticky. But I love them!
UD 24/7 Liner in Rockstar. It's like a dark plummy purple. Essentially the same color as Tarina Tarantino's Hyperdream liner in Ultraviolet (which I also have), but I think Rockstar is a smudge darker. I also prefer the 24/7 liners over the Hyperdream liners. I just wish they weren't so darn expensive!
UD Dew Me moisturizing makeup spray. Perfect for those who use mineral makeup or powder foundation. Makes your skin more dewy and less "powdery." I have also tried the All Nighter spray which I used on my wedding day, and it works really well.
UD Sellout. It's darker than Virgin (Naked palette) but lighter than Sin (Naked palette). It is also more beige-toned, while Sin is more pink. I prefer this one over Sin, anyway :)
UD YDK Shadow. I wish this one came in the Naked palette. I also wish Flipside was sold separately lol. I love neutrals with a "pop" of color like Flipside (I'm wearing something like that right now actually!) and I find that NYX Ultra Pearl Mania (in Aqua pearl, I believe?) is a good substitute. And only $2.99!
UD Naked Palette. So versatile! They now come with a full-sized eyeshadow brush as opposed to the dual-ended 24/7 liner (which I would rather have) but regardless it is a great palette. Go get it if you don't own it already.
Can you tell I love Urban Decay? lol

1 month!

I cannot believe it has been a month since the wedding! We might go celebrate our "1 month" (though technically our almost 6 month lol) at a sushi restaurant or something. Unfortunately, we don't know of any good places, so I hope we pick a good one the first time.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the wedding (I have a lot of favorites, but here are some!) They are in reverse, descending order (from the end of the reception to the beginning of the wedding day haha) because Blogger never puts them in the order I want. And every time I post pictures, they are either way too big or too small. Anyway, without further adieu...

during the "dollar dance" (we made $150!)
The DJ had all of these cool little props, including flashy light-up tiaras lol
our first dance :)
I LOVE this picture of my brother and my mom entering the reception hall :)
cake topper :) those calla lilies were made out of marzipan!

we did a dove release. Eddie & I had 2 in this little heart-shaped basket and the handler had the remaining 10 that he released once we released our 2 :)
you really can't see it here, but during the ceremony I was so nervous that I broke out in red splotches all over my back and shoulders :( They disappeared after the ceremony, though!

mama bear :)
close-up detail of my dress :)
OF COURSE I had to have an Army garter! it might be hard to see but attached to it are my grandparents' (maternal) wedding rings from Poland, which are like >60 years old.

We have had a bug problem lately, though not as bad as those bugs in Oklahoma ;) Just tiny little ants in our bathroom. It's not a few here and there...there are a ton of them. One day I killed 20 (yes, I counted haha) ants just roaming around in our sink, and throughout the day I killed I don't know how many more, but a lot. This has been going on for awhile, actually. I noticed they have been coming from behind our mirror, so I went out and bought some bug spray an sprayed the bottom edge of it. I didn't see any ants for the rest of the day :) I only saw 1 this morning...but if it gets to be bad again, then I'll just have to spray again and hope for the best.

Then there are these damn fruit flies. I set up some fly tape, and this morning there were 7 trapped on there...but there are at least another 5 flying around. And I killed 5 the other day. There are probably more. UGH! On occasional bug doesn't bother me, but when there are a whole bunch of them it's ridiculous!

Eddie has an extended weekend coming up - he'll be off Friday through Sunday :) I'm trying to talk him into either going away for the weekend (either to Corpus Christi (there is a beach there!) or SA, Dallas or Houston) or going to BLORA for a whole day or two (it's like this really big lake and they have super cheap boat/kayak rentals...they also have parks and water slides and things...Eddie told me it's really nice). We'll see. It will beat hanging around this apartment for the whole weekend and it will be my second to last weekend of freedom before I start work. I'll have some of my weekends off, but I don't know how my schedule will be at this moment. We will just have to wait and see :)

I also wanted to buy a ring that I could wear to work instead of having to wear my actual wedding ring, so I found *THIS* and bought it. It is actually a pinky ring, but I found it in a size 4 which will fit my ring finger :) I probably could have gone to some cheap jewelry store but they either have something I don't like or (99.9% of the time) the rings are too big for me. And for $50, it's not a bad price in my opinion.

And speaking of work, I start orientation next week!! Then the following week I will start orienting on the floor. I am excited but also pretty nervous...real-world nursing is nothing like nursing school, and it's really scary to think that I will be doing this all on my own relatively soon. No more "safety" net with the instructors/school, even though I was a damn good nursing student! It's just a big change, especially since I still feel like I know NOTHING even after passing my NCLEX. I've been hitting the books these past few weeks reviewing (because I haven't touched anything "nursing" since I passed my NCLEX back in March) but I realize everything will come with time. I just want to be successful. Especially since I am not doing an internship, and I hope this will be a good enough orientation for me. It's what makes or breaks you as a nurse, including your whole career.

....

I haven't been very happy lately.

I just feel like hubby and I never do anything. Because we don't. When he comes home from work he takes a nap - a very LONG nap - 4-5 hours worth, usually. Then he'll wake up and either play his Playstation or play Call of Duty online with one of his friends...while I'm sitting around doing nothing. And it sucks, because it's not like I have any friends here (yet) and I'm not working quite yet so it's not like I can really do anything.

Tonight we were actually supposed to go out for once, but of course he's still napping, at 2130...and chances are we probably won't go anywhere. I bet he'll wake up and play Call of Duty and I don't know, I'll just sit around and twiddle my thumbs or something. And I'll be extremely bored, because I took a cat nap earlier expecting to go out and now we probably won't. Fabulous.

We don't spend any time together. Maybe he thinks we do and our "time together" includes being in the same room together but I'm sick of him coming home, napping forever, playing his games and then going back to bed.

I kind of just want to leave and go take a drive somewhere...not really sure where I would go and it's kind of pointless for me to drive somewhere and then come back lol. I don't know. I'm just sick of being cooped up here and sick of being ignored. It shouldn't be like this.

I have another week off and then the following week I start my in-class orientation for a week. That weekend the hubby just so happens to have an extended weekend off, so I'm hoping that MAYBE we'll actually go somewhere instead of sitting in this damn apartment doing nothing.

I hope.

What's your song? Week 16!

I haven't been participating in the past few weeks...I have just been so busy!

This week's song is called In Front Of You by The Quiet Kind. This song was played in the season 7 finale of Grey's Anatomy - Unaccompanied Minor. If it weren't for Grey's, I would have never heard this song. In fact, if it weren't for Grey's, there would be a lot of good songs that I would miss out on.

I just think it is a beautiful song...close your eyes and listen...

And don't forget to link up with Goodnight Moon!

FRG's.

Can anybody shed some light on this?

I have been wanting to get involved, but of course all FRG event information is sent to E's AKO account and he just does a really bad job at informing me of when these events are -_-

E also found out that his unit's highest-ranking officer (a Captain) is leaving. That means his wife, who is the current FRG leader, is also leaving. The FRG has no leader. E will be the new highest-ranking officer and according to him, that would be in the position to be the FRG leader.

He told them I couldn't do it, because I would be too busy.

That's probably true...I will be working full-time nights, which means at least 3-4, maybe even 5 nights/week. I will also have to work at least 4 weekend nights/month. I can do that however I want...I could work every saturday, or work 2 weekends in a row have the next two off, work the last 2 weekends, work every other weekend...anyway, would being an FRG leader on this type of schedule still be doable? I know nothing about the FRG and I'm hoping some of you can shed some light on this...even about your past experiences with the FRG. I would like to at least try, but I don't know how time consuming it will be.

job update

Human Resources called me today and I accepted the job offer :) I found out that I will be on the 3rd floor TCU (called the PGCU) - which is the very nice unit. Brand new (only 2 months old) and it's biiiiiig. I'm very excited :) I will start June 21st with some in-process/general orientation beginning next week :D

milspouse-friday-fill-in.jpg

Be sure to head on over to Wifey to link up!

1. It's now June (w00t!)...what plans do you have for summer?
working a lot and making bank :) we might have some visitors later this summer (E's parents, my brother [unless he gets a job down here, he has an interview!], one of my roommates and her boyfriend!) so that will be nice. and maybe E & I will take a trip too...maybe to Corpus Christi for a weekend (there is beach there! It's ~4 hours & 40min away, tho)

2. What is your favorite summer memory as a kid?
Going to the beach A LOT. I grew up in Florida and my dad would always take me :)

3. If wild animals could be made as pets without fear of them ever being dangerous, what kind of exotic animal would you want as a pet?
A PANDA! Yes, they can be dangerous and unpredictable, too! But I wouldn't have to worry about that.

4. Is there anything about deployments that you do like?
Still an Army wife n00b and haven't been through a deployment...but a CLEAN apartment would be one of those things :)

5. Your own question: hmmm. If you could have one magical power, what would it be?

I GOT THE JOB!

I had my interview today and unfortunately a lot of the questions I got asked weren't ones I prepared for lol but they obviously liked me, because after I got a tour of the PCU (progressive care), TCU (transitional care) and ICU, I got offered the job right then and there!

I AM A CRITICAL CARE NURSE! :)

Unfortunately I don't know what unit I will be on lol...I originally interviewed for the TCU but that position was filled. They are hiring on ICU and PCU, but they just need to figure out where they will place me. I will find out this afternoon.

I will not start until closer to the end of June...but I am happy that I at least have a job :) I know I will have to take an EKG class as well as a class on vasoactive drugs. I will also have to eventually get my ACLS. I am very excited, though. It has been my dream to work in the ICU/ICU Stepdown and I am finally there!
