question for the MilSpouse RN's!

Question:

Do you know if military hospitals hire new grad RN's or do they prefer someone with experience? I'm thinking about applying to a hospital at our first duty station but I wonder if I should even bother? Thankfully the area also has a lot of civilian hospitals so I can always try that, too.

  1. Yes they do. I had a friend get a job right off the bat. Then, once you get with them, it is SO easy to transfer within the army system when you PCS.

  2. They want at least a year of experience and wouldn't even consider me when I asked. Meh.

  3. hmm maybe it just depends on the location? We're PCSing to Fort Hood and the hospital they have there is CRDAMC

  6. The naval hospital wants 2 years of experience no exceptions, don't even apply without it AND a BSN, or some other Bachelor's Degree, but are an RN. Like someone who as a Bachelor's in business, but got an ADN. They won't employ you without a Bachelors.

I got this information from the credentialing manager at the naval hospital here.

  7. When I went to get some information about Fort Campbell's hospital, they told me I needed a year experience before I could apply (this was last March). It might be different for different posts though. I suggest that you should try a teaching hospital or hospital with a really good new grad orientation because it's a really important foundation and then you will be ready to just get thrown into the army hospital!

  9. Hey there - I'm following you, too! Saw this post and figured it applied! I think for the majority of the Army hospitals (which, I'm referring to since you're Army) really want at least one year's experience. I know the hospital on post @ Ft. Bragg won't take new grads. A friend of mine from nursing school (who was ROTC and is now active duty) is stationed @ Ft. Sam Houston and she said they don't have new grad nurses at her hospital on post. Not sure about Ft. Hood, though, but all you have to do is call Human Resources and ask!

And yes, as a new grad, you need one that has a strong orientation program! What kind of unit do you want to work on?

  10. I'm really interested in critical care - loved my rotation and I occasionally pick up in the ICU/ICU stepdown units at my hospital. I'd love to work on an M/SICU unit or even ER. I also love cardiac so I would also be happy on a telemetry/some sort of cardiac unit (I precepted on a cardiovasc surgery unit/VICU stepdown and loved it!). Those would be my ideal units, but if I end up on med-surg then that's fine too haha. My home unit is a med-surg unit so I'm pretty used to it.
